BSPS Convocation Slated for May 13

The Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science Class of 2022 will be recognized during a Convocation ceremony on Friday, May 13, at 2pm in Room 201 of Pharmacy South. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend.  A reception will immediately follow.

Dr. Chris McCurdy, a 1998 alumnus of the UGA College of Pharmacy, will be the keynote speaker. Earning a Ph.D. in Pharmacy at UGA, Dr. McCurdy is a  professor in the Departments of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutics, the Frank A. Duckworth Eminent Scholar Chair, and the director of the CTSI Translational Drug Development Core at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. McCurdy is a broadly trained pharmaceutical scientist and pharmacist whose research focuses on the design, synthesis, and development of drugs to treat pain, anxiety, mental health, and substance abuse. He is an internationally recognized expert on Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), that is under investigation for opioid withdrawal syndrome. Most notably, Dr. McCurdy has developed a PET/MR imaging diagnostic agent for visualizing the origins of chronic neuropathic pain by interacting with sigma receptors at the site of nerve damage. Dr. McCurdy previously served as President of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and also serves as a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee.

Twenty-eight BSPS students will be recognized during the Convocation.  Ransom Jones, class valedictorian, will deliver the student address.  For details on the event, contact Jamie Hailey.

PBS Graduates Prepped for the Future

Six students from CoP’s Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences Department will be awarded graduate degrees during UGA’s Graduate Commencement Ceremony this Friday morning at Stegeman Coliseum.

Leah Helton, Ameya Limaye, Menbere Wendimu, and Lingling Xu will receive their Doctorate in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences, while Terry Nguyen and Tobin Paez will pick up their Master’s Degree in the same discipline.

“We are all very proud of these students, who have worked hard and creatively to earn their advanced degrees in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences,” said Dr. Shelley Hooks, PBS Interim Department Head and Associate Vice President in the Office of the Vice President of Research. “Whether they choose a career in academia, private industry, or elsewhere – or pursue additional coursework and education – I am confident they each will make significant contributions to the future of innovative drug discovery and research.”

The soon-to-be graduates provided a brief summary of their PBS highlights and their plans for the future. Read the full story here.

BSPS Valedictorian is "Amazing Student"

“A pharmaceutical sciences student from Suwanee, Ransom Jones always knew he wanted to work in medicine and be a medical inventor. His brother was born with severe cerebral palsy, which has been instrumental in Jones’ commitment to eradicate diseases and improve the overall quality of life through new medicines.”

If this story lead feels as if you’re having a déjà vu experience, you’re right. This intro kicked off an Amazing Student feature, published by UGA in September 2021, which spotlighted Ransom Jones, a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences candidate for graduation, who will be the valedictorian speaker at the program’s convocation ceremony this Friday at 2pm at the College of Pharmacy. The good news for the PharmDawg Nation is that Ransom will be around for another year; he’s staying at CoP to complete his Master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences!

Ransom provided an update on his life since the story was published more than nine months ago, his plans ahead, and what it means to be selected Valedictorian of the BSPS Class of 2022. No question about it; Ransom continues to be “amazing!”

Changes to COVID-19 Campus Response

As we approach the close of the Spring Semester, we would like to express our gratitude to our faculty, staff and students for your patience and flexibility over the past two years.

As the COVID-19 pandemic transitions and public health conditions and treatments improve, UGA will begin treating COVID-19 as we do any other infectious disease cases. On May 16, 2022, we will discontinue the following COVID-19 measures on campus:

  • Weekly health and exposure updates on the COVID-19 website (a final update will publish on May 18, 2022);
  • Weekend call center staffing by Student Care and Outreach;
  • Accommodations for isolation and quarantine housing;
  • Pop-up and surveillance testing; and
  • Dawgcheck as a reporting tool for positive cases.

Additionally, in light of the recent federal court decision, the University System of Georgia no longer requires the use of masks on campus transportation, consistent with other major transportation providers.

Thank you once again for doing your part to help keep us Georgia Strong/Dawg Strong. Have a safe and healthy summer.
