Yin Zhu Publishes Article about COPD, Potential Drug Target for Treatment

Yin Zhu, a CET Ph.D. student, recently published an article in The American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology entitled "Dysregulation of miR-103a Medicates Cigarette Smoking Induced Lipid-laden Macrophage Formation," which can be found here

"Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States," Zhu said. "Currently, the treatment of COPD relies on a stepwise algorithm of inhaler therapies without targeting systemic processes. Cigarette smoking is the primary risk factor for COPD, and studies have shown that COPD patients have altered lipid metabolism. Our findings identified a gene that maintains lipid homeostasis, which provides new insights into the development of COPD and suggests a novel potential drug target for treatment."

Zhu's article has also been further discussed in an editorial written by Layal Massara and Philippe Gosset, which can be read here

Way to go, Yin! We are PharmDawg Proud!
