Faculty & Staff Retreat Thursday & Friday

The College of Pharmacy’s College-wide Faculty and Staff Retreat will be held Thursday, August 5, 1:00pm–4:00pm and Friday, August 6, 9:00am–4:00pm at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel. Because this will be the first time in so very long that we will gather collectively, we have also invited recently retired colleagues to join us in an optional reception on Thursday, August 5, 4:00pm–5:30pm.

We will use the retreat to reconnect with one another, engage in transformative thinking about our future, and hone our abilities to thrive in turbulent times. The attire is business casual and the USG recommends everyone to wear a mask or face covering while inside campus facilities. We will have disposable masks and hand sanitizer available for everyone.

More dates for fall orientation events below - including the PharmD Class of 2025 White Coat Ceremony and extended campus dates!

GSHP Annual Resident Research Forum
 
GSHP hosted their annual Resident Research Forum Friday at Mercer University. This event was hybrid, with approximately 100 participants. Anthony Hawkins, chair of the Student & Resident Committee, organized and hosted the event. UGA-affiliated speakers included Sharmon Osae, Christy Norman, Maria Thurston, Marjorie Phillips, and Anthony Hawkins. Many PharmDawgs were in attendance both physically and virtually!

Class of 2021 Georgia Pharmacist Magazine e-Published

The Georgia Pharmacist Magazine for the Class of 2021 is available online!  This yearbook-style document contains a directory of class members; a feature on Dr. Brian Seagraves, who was the recipient of the magazine’s dedication; a letter from Dean Kelly Smith and Class President Dr. Nick Rozelle; student org highlights; photographs; and more.  This keepsake publication is posted on the College’s website for perpetuity. A message to the Class of 2021 – “Your presence will always be felt, and you will remain a PharmDawg throughout your lifetime.”

QPR Suicide Prevention Training

As part of the University System of Georgia’s Mental Health Initiative, all faculty, staff, and students at all USG institutions are eligible to participate in QPR Suicide Prevention Training. As outlined on the USG website, “QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer – the three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.”  The 1.5-hour training sessions will be held virtually (via Microsoft Teams) throughout the fall semester.  Find more information about the upcoming training dates/times and sign-up details here. Dates/times for future trainings will be added to the registration page monthly.

COLT - COVID-19 Information

Updated COVID-19 Guidance from the University System of Georgia

The University System of Georgia recognizes COVID-19 vaccines offer safe, effective protection and urges all students, faculty, staff and visitors to get vaccinated either on campus or with a local provider.  Faculty, staff and students can schedule an appointment directly with the University Health center to get vaccinated.  Additionally, everyone is encouraged to wear a mask or face covering while inside campus facilities. The system continues to work closely with the Georgia Department of Public Health to prioritize the health and safety of our campus communities.  Please see this UGA message for more information.

Dr. May Honored at AU Medical Center Pharmacy

Dr. Rusty May was honored yesterday with an appreciation certificate for the AU Medical Center Pharmacy from the Georgia Cancer Center at AU in celebration of their 1000th stem cell transplant. Dr. May was the Clinical Pharmacy Manager when their first stem cell transplant was performed in 1997. 
Drs. Chu and Singh Issued Patent

Congratulations to Drs. David Chu and Uma Singh on the recent issuance of U.S. Utility Patent Number 10,995,093 titled “​​SYNTHESIS OF 2'-FLUORO-6'-METHYLENE CARBOCYCLIC ADENOSINE (FMCA) AND 2'-FLUORO-6'-METHYLENE CARBOCYCLIC GUANOSINE (FMCG).”
Dr. Newsome Receives NIH LRP Award

Dr. Andrea Newsome was selected to receive an NIH Loan Repayment Programs (LRP) award from the Clinical through the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The award is for a period of two years. Congratulations, Dr. Newsome!
UGAC3 Members Publish in AJHP

Congratulations to UGAC3 members, Drs. Andrea Newsome, Susan Smith, Anthony Hawkins, Trisha Branan, and Chris Bland; current student Rebecca Powell; and former AU/UGA resident Pam Ku on their recent publication, "Kindling the fire: The power of mentorship," published in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy. The team was led by Dr. Newsome. Kudos to all!

Johnna Hodges Receives 2021 DLA Best Paper Award

Johnna Hodges was acknowledged at the Distance Learning Administration (DLA) 2021 conference, held July 25-28 on Jekyll Island, for her DLA 2021 Best Paper Award for her article, "Facilitating Active Engagement of Students in an Online Asynchronous Program in Biomedical Regulatory Sciences." Congratulations, Johnna!

Back-to-School Bash Volunteers Needed

The Back-to-School Bash will be held from 4:30 to 6:30pm on Thursday, August 19, and faculty/staff volunteers are needed to help make the event a success! Those wanting to be a part of this unique community building event can sign-up here. NOTE: Staff members wanting to fill a volunteer role during business hours should have prior consent of their supervisor before registering to help.
In-State Travel Authority Requirement Eliminated
 
In order to align the College of Pharmacy with UGA standard policy, faculty and staff are no longer required to complete a Travel Authority for in-state travel, effective August 1, 2021. I  However, employees must obtain prior approval from their supervisor before scheduling a trip to assure that expenses will be reimbursed. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy change, please contact John Varghese or Jessica Hart in the Business Affairs Office.
FERPA Certification Quiz
 
The University of Georgia requires all employees who have any Student Information System access (such as Banner, Athena, DegreeWorks, Argos, SAGE, Content, and SecureReports) to complete the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) quiz by Friday, September 17, 2021. Completion of the quiz is required to retain eligibility to use the systems mentioned.
UGA Staff Mentor Program

In 2019, the presidential task force for staff professional development proposed the UGA Staff Mentor Program to cultivate a mentoring culture and achieve its vision of becoming a thriving learning organization.

To maximize opportunities for connections to occur, the UGA Staff Mentor Program will utilize a group mentoring model. Mentor Circles will include one mentor and 5-7 mentees who meet for 12 weeks.

2021 USG Well-being Rewards Program
 
The 2021 USG Well-being Rewards Program is offered to all benefits-eligible UGA faculty and staff. Those employees and their spouses who are enrolled in a USG health care plan can earn $100 in well-being credit by completing healthy activities by Sept. 30. Participants can complete a wide range of activities for credit such as getting a flu shot, volunteering within the community, tracking activity and more.
 
This program is voluntary and confidential. Strict precautions have been taken to ensure that participants’ health information will be kept completely confidential. For more information on the privacy policy of this program, visit www.virginpulse.com/privacy-policy.

·         Enter your first name, last name and date of birth
·         Accept the terms and conditions
·         Follow the steps to obtain your login credentials
