May 19, 2022

Dear College of Pharmacy Colleagues, Students, and Friends:
This time of year offers us much cause for celebration – and an opportunity for renewal. Our graduates are beginning the next phase of their career journey. Current students are embarking on practice experiences, internships, and laboratory rotations. Many of us are anticipating the arrival of new students in the next few months. And we are all looking forward to the calmer, less hectic pace of the summer months, which allows us to refresh, rejuvenate, and refocus.
Unfortunately, this joyful and peaceful season is occurring against the backdrop of ongoing strife and turmoil. Hate-fueled shootings in cities across our country, challenging economic times, the war in Ukraine, and the continued toll of the pandemic are just a few of the trials we continue to face. In essence, our celebratory spirit and anticipated summer respite likely have been interrupted and even diminished.
These burdens as well as others you may be experiencing are not easily or outwardly expressed.  However, that doesn’t negate their impact on us. The purpose of my message is simple and sincere.  As your Dean, I understand and feel your conflict, concern, and turmoil. I want to make sure you are aware of the resources available at our College and at UGA, and encourage you to take advantage of them if necessary.
Student Resources for Health and Wellness Student Emergency Funds Faculty and Staff Support Please take care of yourself. And know that I, along with other leaders in the College of Pharmacy are here to support and honor your quest for health, wellness, and balance in your life. May these summer months provide you with moments to reflect, reset, and recharge.
My genuine best wishes,

Kelly Smith, Dean

New PharmCast: Skin Cancer Prevention with Dr. Aderonke Adeboye

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with an estimated 20% of the population developing the condition in their lifetime. This means approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day.  To reduce your chances of developing skin cancer, listen to the latest episode of PharmCast for the Community with Dr. Aderonke Adeboye, a pharmacy expert in Dermatology, who explains the different types of skin cancers and tips we can use to keep our skin healthy and cancer free.  Dr. Brown and she discuss ways to protect yourself from the sun, including how sunscreens work, and common mistakes we all make with these skincare products. Watch below or tune in here.
