A fitting legacy—
Several years ago Tom Lowder opened a fund in The Foundation in memory of his close childhood friend, Peter Van Wezel, who died in his 20’s. Peter, who was Jewish, loved being a life-guard growing up in Montgomery, so Tom thought a fitting memorial would be a fund in The Foundation for the swim program at the LJCC. Recently the LJCC used a grant from the Peter Van Wezel Fund to purchase inflatables for play in the Center’s indoor pool. From generation to generation…The first picture is of l-r Peter, Tom and his twin Jimmy as 6 year-olds getting ready for a swim day. The second is one of our kids enjoying the gift in Peter’s name. A wonderful legacy reaching across time.

The focal point of Jewish life is the transmission of a heritage across the generations
—Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
The Foundation, in conjunction with The Grafman Endowment Fund for Temple Emanu-El and The Temple Beth-El Foundation hosted a successful program on March 3rd about transmitting your values to the next generations. The program was conducted by Jewish Federations of North America Vice President, Dirk Bird. Dirk provided much food-for-thought and great conversation starters. In addition, Amy and Michael Saag and Alan Weintraub talked about The Jewish Future Pledge (not a pledge in the traditional sense, but instead, a promise) and how they plan to use it to transmit their values. To see the program, click here, or to access Jewish Future Pledge’s guide to starting the values conversation visit https://jewishfuturepledge.org/library/Conversation-Guide.pdf.

Pikuach Nefesh…saving a life –a core value of Judaism
The war in Ukraine has displaced millions, killed thousands and put the lives of millions more at risk. The needs are tremendous and growing. The Birmingham Jewish Federation has raised $100,000 to date, with over $40,000 of that coming from our Foundation Funds. These funds have been used to provide emergency assistance for refugees and those still in Ukraine and to help Ukranian Jews wishing to make Aliyah to Israel. If you would like to recommend a donation from the fund you have established, or increase what you have already given, contact Sally Friedman at sallyf@bjf.org 205-803-1519. Or go directly to the BJF link to help Ukraine.

61 days and counting to camp… and we need your help!
Each year, The Birmingham Jewish Foundation and Collat Jewish Family Services work together to provide scholarships for Birmingham kids to attend Jewish non-profit summer camps, through The Birmingham Jewish Foundation’s Jewish camp funds. The funds are tied to specific camps (no loyalties like camp loyalties!) and have provided thousands in camp scholarships each summer.
The Foundation’s Bama To Barney Fund (Camp Barney Medintz) is in need of money for scholarships. Because Barney is affiliated with the Atlanta Jewish Community Centers, they do not provide any scholarship money for Birmingham campers.
If you would like to help support Camp Barney scholarships, contact Sally Friedman at The Birmingham Jewish Foundation 205-803-1519 or sallyf@bjf.org |
