The Birmingham Jewish Foundation ended 2021 with a bang and has started 2022 with a roar.  The Foundation made grants of almost $2 million last year and we’re starting this year with lots of good news!

"As the generation, so the leader; as the leader, so the generation. "

The Federation’s  new young leadership group had its first meeting on February 6th.  The year-long course will help participants learn leadership skills; become more educated about our local Jewish community institutions; and develop a deeper understanding about issues facing Israel and the Jewish world. The course will culminate in a group study mission to Israel.  Participants are: Todd Doobrow, Isa Dorsky, Alex Grodner, Kent Haines, Hirshel Hall, Josh Lourie, Rachel Mazer, Andrew Miller, Aaron Nelson,  Andrew Newcomb,  Anderw Petrofsky, Nadav Raviv,  Evan Rhodes, Danielle Rosenbaum, Jennifer Samuelson, Mark Schaeffer, Sarah Schaeffer, Carlie Stein Somerville and Hillary Weiss. Each has agreed to serve on a Jewish community board or committee upon completion of the course.  The Birmingham Jewish Foundation is helping to underwrite this program.

Roll Tide, Chapter 2

Mike Honan and Roxanne Travelute have opened a Foundation fund to support the Hillel Connections program. This is a summer internship program to introduce college students to our vibrant Alabama Jewish community, especially Birmingham.  It provides connections to local families and programming to introduce  these college students to life here after college.  If you would like to support this great program, contact Sally Friedman 205-266-8387 or Sallyf@bjf.org  or Roxanne Travelute at rrtravelute@icloud.com.

If you do not think about your future, you cannot have one.
                                                                                  --John Galsworthy

The Federation will be unveiling a community strategic plan in early March.  Almost 600 surveys and interviews were included to provide a data-driven blueprint for a vibrant future for our Jewish community.  Chairs for this process were Joel Piassick and Layne Held.   The Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund provided major funding for this project.  Stay tuned for more exciting information!
