Running Free: Thanksgiving Edition
November 2022
From the Bridge
I love the richness created when individual cultures celebrate holidays collectively. Our family and community systems are dynamic, and each entry and exit recalibrates the system in big and small ways. Some things get held on to long after we appreciate their significance and others have no staying power. For me it’s my Mom’s cornbread stuffing in the former (probably because she’s from Arkansas and supper isn’t supper without cornbread?) and the 5K turkey trot in the latter (for way more obvious reasons).

This year I am again filled with gratitude for Tall Ships America members and supporters as we navigated difficult waters and gathered more wisdom and strength together. We continue to recalibrate our settings in response to the world’s and our members’ changing needs, and we embrace new traditions and new directions as we release what no longer serves us. In this, our 50th year, we redouble commitment to Adventure and Education Under Sail® as we create more depth and breadth to our portfolio of programming and services.

There are many things we in Tall Ships America are thankful for:
  • People committed to the work and donating time, money and energy to tall ships, sail training programs and Tall Ships America
  • Participation in our events and gatherings to build a strong and vibrant association
  • Involved and engaged members contributing to the strategic development of our community
  • A dedicated Board of Directors and talented staff team.
This Thanksgiving Edition of Running Free is full of useful information, and I draw your attention to the call for annual awards nominations and a call for nominations to the Board. Please consider getting more involved in our community however you are able.

As we gather this week with family and friends or enjoy some solitude and quiet space, I harken back to the reason for this uniquely American holiday of giving thanks and include a moment of reflection and gratitude for the astonishing ships, people, programs and potential of the American Sail Training Association (est 1973).
“Looking behind, I am filled with gratitude, looking forward, I am filled with vision, looking upwards I am filled with strength, looking within, I discover peace.”

Launch of 2022 Annual Appeal
While annual membership fees pay for a portion of our work, our Annual Appeal raises funds that allow us to reach beyond membership services and increase the impact of this unique community through strategic advocacy, government connections, program development, and sharing good ideas.

We ask our members and supporters to help us develop and expand our mission-driven efforts in three ways: (1) renew your membership (if you aren’t an individual member, please consider becoming one), (2) recommit to engaging with us and this community throughout our 50th year, and (3) make a gift to our Annual Appeal.
