Inland transport plays a crucial role in the global economy, connecting people, goods and services to markets and opportunities. However, the rapid growth in this sector has had a significant impact on the environment. Climate change is one of the most pressing and complex global challenges of our time, requiring a multi-pronged and multisectoral approach. As custodian of 59 legal instruments and the ultimate United Nations regulatory platform for road, rail, inland waterway and intermodal transport, the Inland Transport Committee has an important role to play in supporting climate action across the UNECE region and beyond.

Launch of the 2023 UN Global Survey on digital and sustainable trade facilitation

The five United Nations regional commissions and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have launched the fifth UN Global Survey on Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation 2023. The 2023 edition consists of 60 measures, including two new sets of measures on “Trade Facilitation for E-Commerce” and “Wildlife Trade Facilitation”, on cross-border e-commerce and the application of electronic CITES permits and certificates. The preliminary results of the 2023 survey will be published in July.

Fourth cycle review of Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing concludes with resolution on accelerating implementation

 
The 61st Commission for Social Development concluded with the adoption of a resolution calling for accelerated implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA). The resolution reaffirms the outcomes of the review of MIPAA in the UNECE region, which concluded last year. The fourth global review of MIPAA marked the 20th anniversary of its adoption and studied member States’ progress for the period 2017-2022 to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing and to promote the development of a society for all ages.

Water

Central Asian experts highlight need to strengthen monitoring and data exchange on water quality and transboundary groundwater

Effective regional cooperation in Central Asia requires joint efforts to harmonize data collection, strengthen monitoring and data exchange on water quality, develop early warning systems on water pollution at transboundary waters, and improve collection and sharing of data on transboundary aquifers. These are the messages of the Regional Workshop on Monitoring, Assessment and Information Sharing in Transboundary Basins in Central Asia that recently took place in Astana. The meeting was organized by the International Water Assessment Centre, UNECE and the Green Central Asia Initiative.

UNECE Helps Armenia improve migration statistics by using administrative data

A new UNECE working paper on population and migration statistics in Armenia reviews innovations developed for the country’s October 2022 population census and discusses how they could be extended to improve the regular production of annual international migration statistics after the census. At the request of the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia (Armstat), UNECE provided technical support to explore ways to strengthen and modernize the production of such statistics and make them more frequent, timely, accurate and efficient to produce.
