The war in Ukraine, elevated inflation and tighter monetary policies will weigh heavily on Europe’s economies this year. Nevertheless, growth is forecast to pick up in 2024 as some of the current headwinds subside, according to the United Nations World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2023. The report presents a gloomy and uncertain near-term outlook for world economy, which has been battered by a series of severe and mutually reinforcing shocks. UNECE issues biodiversity monitoring guidelines to help countries implement Kunming-Montreal framework

UNECE has published an updated guidance to help governments to strengthen biodiversity monitoring as a basis for sharpened biodiversity protection policies across all sectors. The guidance is the first of its kind to build on the historic Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, agreed at the 15th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-15) in December 2022. It comes at a crucial moment, with global biodiversity declining faster than at any time in human history.

Could synthetic data redefine the way we share statistical insights?

UNECE’s new publication provides many of the main elements needed to start exploring the implementation of synthetic data, as a foundation to motivate further development of this field. Data create value by guiding the decisions of governments, businesses and individuals, helping to target resources where they are most needed. However, producers of statistics face a serious constraint in facilitating access to their data due to the need to protect confidentiality of individuals. Synthetic data provide an alternative way to meet the needs of users who require microdata.
