As part of the events organized for its 70th Commission session, UNECE is calling on youth to submit visuals – photos, paintings and art pieces – to reflect their vision of a more circular, digital and sustainable future. Under the theme “What does a green future look like to you,” UNECE will display the most inspiring submissions during the three virtual side events held on 3-5 April 2023, which will focus on promotion of circular economy and sustainable use of natural resources, digital and green transformations, and future of regulations in the pan-European region. The submission deadline is 24 March 2023.

Agricultural standards
UNECE celebrates 60 years of the adoption of standard for seed potatoes
Adopted in 1963, the UNECE standard for seed potatoes provides a framework for the international trade of seed potatoes. It is currently the only international standard that ensures that seed potatoes meet specific and harmonized criteria for commercial quality, health and traceability, all of which are essential for maintaining global food security and supporting sustainable agriculture. The anniversary serves as a reminder of the importance of UNECE's work to facilitate trade in key agricultural products and staple foods, such as potato, through the adoption of quality standards for trade.

Air pollution
UNECE launches e-learning course on air pollution emission inventory development
What are emission inventories and what purpose do they serve? Why is it important to develop emission inventories? A new e-learning course on how to report emissions under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (Air Convention) offers answers to these questions. Reporting emission inventories is a basic obligation for all parties under the Air Convention. An emission inventory quantifies air pollutants and/or greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere in a defined geographical area and time span. Inventories are used to study trends in major air pollution sources and evaluate the impact of air pollution abatement measures.

Industrial accidents
Kazakhstan takes further measures to prevent accidental water pollution from mine tailings
Industrial safety and the prevention of accidental water pollution were high on Kazakhstan’s agenda this week, with the Second Meeting of the Inter-institutional Working Group on Tailings Safety and the Prevention of Accidental Water Pollution (IIWG). Kazakhstan is home to many industrial activities, including tailings, which contain mining waste. Coordinated activities of state bodies are crucial to prevent industrial accidents and minimize their potentially catastrophic consequences. At the same time, actions by and effective cooperation with operators and other stakeholders is essential, as well as information-sharing with and participation of the public.
