Message from the President 

Welcome to BGDA for 2021! We are very excited to have you on board for what will hopefully be a fantastic season ahead.

It was excellent to see so many enthusiastic students at our Development Day on Sunday 7 February 2021. We hope to see this dedication and passion continue into our Monday Competition and Junior Monday Program. 

This email contains important information regarding our programs which will be offered. You can find the dates for our 2021 programs here.

COVID-19 Policies 

You can find a copy of the BGDA's COVID-19 Policies on our website here. Our policies aim to manage the risk of COVID-19 by adopting precautions in line with the Queensland Department of Health's advice. We will inform you of any updates to our policies as necessary. 

Schedule

The schedule for Round 1 of the Monday Competition is as follows:

4:15pm: Afternoon tea and training
5:00pm: Topic Release
6:00pm: Debate Commences
​7:30pm - Pick up time 

Please ensure that students arrive at least 15 minutes prior to topic release.

The schedule for Round 1 of the Junior Monday Program (grade 7-8) is as follows:

4:15pm: Training workshop
5:15pm: Afternoon tea
5:30pm: Training workshop
6:30pm: Pick up time

When students arrive at the BGGS they will be able to see the team they are debating and allocated rooms listed. We will provide you with an update on debate results and the point tally in our next newsletter. 

Rules and Procedures

 Round 1 debates will centre on the theme of Crime and Justice.

Competition rules 

You can find a copy of the BGDA Rules here

Some important rules to note are:

  • The Monday Competition (for students in grades 9-12) will run across five rounds, culminating in a Grand Final
  • The Junior Monday Program (for students in grades 7-8) will feature one round of training, followed by four rounds of debates
  • Teams that do not notify the  Competitions Officer that they will not be attending a debate prior to 10am the day of the debate will be deemed to have forfeited and will be penalised accordingly
  • Students must participate in at least two debates to be eligible to speak in the Grand Final
  • Students in Grade 10+ will debate with POIs
  • Students in the Senior Division will debate with Reply Speeches

Training 

In Round 1 training will be divided into 4 groups:

  • Junior (grade 7-8): extended debating and short preparation workshops
  • Grade 9: short preparation workshop
  • Grade 10: Points of Information
  • Senior: Reply Speeches and Points of Information

All students are encouraged to arrive by 4:15pm so that they can benefit from this training (and free afternoon tea!). We will provide you with all training materials following Round 1 in our next newsletter.

Opportunities

  • IWD Debate Night: in honour of International Women's Day 2021 debates in round 2 will be followed by an IWD event featuring a key note speaker and exhibition debate by BGDA alumni and experienced female debaters. A free pizza dinner will be served from 7:15pm, with the evening concluding at 8:30pm. Students who are not registered in the BGDA Competition for 2021 are also welcome to attend. 
  • Adjudicate for the BGDA: applications are currently open to student adjudicators in grade 12 who are not participating in the Monday Competition but would be interested in adjudicating for the Junior Monday Program. Students can apply here. Students adjudicators will be awarded an honorarium in recognition of their travel expenses of $40 per debate. 
  • QDU Workshops: you find information on upcoming QDU workshops here
  • QDU Recent Grad Day: students who graduated secondary school in 2019 or 2020 are invited to attend the QDU Recent Grad Day. You can find more information here
