PASTORS CORNER

On Sabbath, July 11, I preached a sermon entitled Fake News and Post-Truth. My sermon concluded with a message, spoken by God and delivered by Jeremiah, which outlined God’s game plan for mission. God’s plan, recorded in Jeremiah 29: 4-7, involves: 1) getting perspective regarding our present situation, 2) getting productive in our work and family subtleties, 3) getting peaceful in engagement with our community, and 4) getting prayerful regarding the community in which we live. On Tuesday, July 28, this God-ordained plan for mission was accepted as a challenge by one of our church families. Cleve, Maridette, and Cayla Sandy performed a mission project in our very own community. The Sandy family provided lunch (a Canadian/Caribbean/Filipino fusion menu) for the law enforcements officers of the Durham Regional Police Service East Division (East Oshawa/Municipality of Clarington) which is located on Maple Grove Road, Bowmanville. I was granted special permission as the Pastor of the Sandy family to attend and was given an opportunity to speak a few words. I shared words of appreciation and shared the text found in Micha 6:8 with the men and women of the police services. I thanked them for their commitment to serve and protect and offered a blessing for the food that was graciously prepared. The men and women of the police services, based on their smiles and appetites, seemed truly thankful for the act of kindness displayed by the Sandy family. Following the blessing of the food, Staff Sargent Jeffrey Haskins provided us with a tour of the facility and educated us on the inner workings and the various department of the facility. When I asked Cleve, Maridette, and Cayla what prompted this act of kindness, multiple answers followed; Cleve said, with so much negativity in the media surrounding policing, maybe an act of kindness would be appreciated; Maridette responded, “this summer represents two years of being in cancer remission, I want to share the blessing of what God has done in my life with others”. Cayla, simply personified what it means to be a Pathfinder by living out being a servant of God and a friend to man. Thank you once again Sandy Family for accepting the challenge and demonstrating what an act of kindness looks like. All of us are challenged to be witnesses for Jesus.
