Dr. Daniel Chastain, along with Dr. Sharmon Osae, Dr. Henry Young in New England Journal of Medicine

Kudos to Dr. Daniel Chastain, Clinical Assistant Professor at the Southwest Georgia Clinical Campus in Albany, who was the lead author of a paper published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine. Co-authors of the paper include Dr. Sharmon Osae, Clinical Assistant Professor at the Southwest Georgia Clinical Campus in Albany, and Dr. Henry Young, Associate Professor and Director of the Pharmaceutical Health Services, Outcomes and Policy Program. Titled “Racial Disproportionality in Covid Clinical Trials,” the article highlights the disparity of minority group representation in COVID-19 clinical trials, despite the higher rates of COVID-19 infection, hospitalization and death among people of color. Faculty Changes Support Future Strategic Plan

An email sent Thursday to faculty and staff from Dean Kelly Smith provided an update on key faculty positions at the College. Dr. Scott Pegan is the new Interim Associate Head of the College of Pharmacy’s Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences Department. In his new role, Dr. Pegan will coordinate PBS’s rapidly growing portfolio of academic programs to assure the consistent delivery, evaluation, and assessment of teaching responsibilities for the PharmD., B.S., and Graduate programs.  Dr. Lori Duke is returning to her fulltime responsibilities as Assistant Dean of Experience Programs. For the last 18 months, Dr. Duke has diligently served in an interim leadership role for Curricular Affairs. In the interim, Dr. Duc Do, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, will oversee PharmD curricular operations and policies (e.g., appeals, Academic and Professionalism Committee); course and classroom scheduling; and related operational aspects (e.g., leading Academic Operations meetings). Currently, leadership is being sought for PharmD curricular design and oversight responsibilities, an area growing in importance for the PharmD program. Faculty Meeting TODAY at 2 pm; Staff Invited for Initial Presentations

The Fall Faculty Meeting will be held today at 2 pm. Staff members are requested to attend the initial presentations, which will be provided by Dean Kelly Smith and Dr. Michael Bartlett, Associate Dean for Science Education, Research and Technology.  Dean Smith will offer an overview of the current state of the College, along with a perspective on the COVID-19 environment and UGA’s Return To Work efforts. Dr. Bartlett will discuss the future Strategic Plan. A calendar invitation was sent to all faculty and staff last Friday, which provides the Zoom link for the meeting. COVID-19 Building Signage

As you return to the college, you will notice a myriad of signs promoting a healthy and safe environment. These signs address everything from the importance of handwashing and masking, to disinfecting common surfaces, to COVID-19 symptoms and more. Please see our folder with our signage selections here. If you have a need for additional signs for your area, or if you would like a sign with a unique or different message, please contact Lillian Ballance or Mickey Montevideo in the Public Relations Office.

Immediate self-reporting is critical to helping assess and respond to risks and exposures of COVID-19 on campus. That’s why UGA has created DawgCheck: an easy-to-use, COVID-19 self-screening tool. With DawgCheck, you can track symptoms related to COVID-19 daily and report a positive COVID-19 test. No symptoms? Great! But still respond through DawgCheck every day before you leave your home or dorm. COVID-19 carriers can be asymptomatic, so using the DawgCheck tool every day is crucial to being proactive in stopping the spread. You will receive email reminders to use DawgCheck every weekday. DEI Dialogue

Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion (CDI): Best Practices for Accommodating Students & Employees with Disabilities 

Training & Development is offering a class discussing the University compliance obligations under Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as relates to UGA students, employees, and other University community members with disabilities. The class will explain the respective responsibilities of the person with a disability and the University in terms of making requests for accommodations and participating in the interactive process to determine if a reasonable accommodation can be provided. The class will also explain the respective roles of UGAs Disability Resource Center, Human Resources and the Equal Opportunity Office in responding to requests for accommodations and insuring legal compliance, and will discuss examples of reasonable accommodations. This class counts as an elective for the Certificate of Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) program.  

This class is being held online via Zoom. All registrants will receive the login link in a separate reminder email from Training & Development or the instructor 1 day before your scheduled class. If you do not receive the email reminder, please contact us at training@uga.edu

College of Pharmacy Launches New Donor Newsletter

Thanks to our generous donors, the College of Pharmacy raised over $27 million during UGA's Commit to Georgia Campaign, which will support numerous efforts at the CoP and beyond. Over the next 12 months, we look forward to sharing with you the impact this support has on our students, faculty, and programs.

The first giving spotlight features Mike Wooten '93, '94, who created the Wooten Family PharmD/MBA Endowed Scholarship at the College to support the new PharmD/MBA Double Dawg program. According to Mike: “My family and I are passionate about helping deserving students in need pursue their academic and professional dreams. When I graduated, I had debts. The debts were not insurmountable due mainly through opportunities afforded to me through scholarships, at the College of Pharmacy. We believe giving back is a response to who comes behind us.”
