WHAT: 2019 SDSMA Annual Leadership Conference
WHEN: Friday, May 31

This year's conference will feature experts who are leaders in trauma medicine and disaster preparedness -- Dr. Charity H. James is the executive director of the Society for Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness. He was instrumental in dealing with the response during incidents after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and is recognized as a leading expert in the area of bio-preparedness. After Dr. Evans' and Dr. James' presentations, a panel discussion will be held with national and local experts on the role of health care providers in preparedness and response to violence.

Next, Dr. Tim Ridgway will give an update on happenings at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, followed by the SDSMA PAC lunch presentation by Joshua L. Shields, Gov. Kristi Noem’s chief of policy and communications.
After lunch, during the membership open forum, members will bring issues that will be forwarded to the SDSMA Policy Council. Several important policy issues have been addressed as a result of our past member open forums thanks to the active engagement from members.
Friday evening is the membership mixer followed by the banquet. During the banquet, physicians will be honored with awards, student scholarship recipients will be recognized, and the new SDSMA president, Dr. Robert J. Summerer of Madison, will be inaugurated.
