New PharmDawg Faculty and Staff Join the College
The College of Pharmacy welcomes two new faculty members and a staff member to the PharmDawg Phamily!
Dr. Eugene Douglass, Assistant Professor in PBS – Dr. Douglass recently joined the Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences Department. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University in 2014 and completed his postdoctoral research in mouse immunology and clinical data-science, with a common theme of designing small-molecule drugs based on biological mechanisms.  Experienced in setting up and managing large-scale academic research tenure-earning laboratories, he has been actively involved in conceiving scientific projects, writing grants and mentoring graduate students.  His future aspirations are to combine his interdisciplinary training and practical experience to build a research program focused on systems pharmacology and to merge tumor genomic sequencing “big data” and chemical biology to develop new drugs that overcome multi-drug resistance in cancer. COVID-19 Testing on Campus Begins Next Week!
UGA is pilot testing COVID-19 viral testing for faculty, staff and students who are not showing symptoms of the virus, and the testing program will be rolled out campus wide during the week of August 10 at Legion Field.  With a target goal of 300 per day, this testing is paid for by UGA and will be free for faculty, students, and staff. Registration will be available here. Please note that the registration site is only available when on the campus network.  If off campus or using cellular, one will need to connect to the UGA VPN. 
The University Health Center staff is leading the efforts for specimen collection.  Once complete, the nasopharyngeal swabs will be analyzed by the CVM’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which has recently obtained certification for analyzing human samples.  Test results will be reported to the individual and the GDPH (as required by the State). Individuals who tested positive are required to report the results on DawgCheck, a symptom checking and notification service of UGA.
From a disease prevention and control standpoint, identifying asymptomatic individuals who can shed the virus will create a safer work environment at the University. As such, per UGA and CDC guidelines, anyone who tests positive will be required to self-isolate for 10-days following the positive test. Individuals who develop symptoms are required to self-isolate 10-days following onset of signs or 24-hrs since resolution of signs, whichever is longer.

August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month 

Did you know that African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian Americans, Hawaiian Natives/Pacific Islanders, and American Indians/Alaskan Natives make up 60% of all people on the national organ transplant waiting list? Although organ transplants can be successful regardless of the race or ethnicity of the donor and recipient, there’s a greater chance of longer-term survival if the shared genetic background of the donor and recipient are closely matched.  Learn about National Minority Donor Awareness Month more here.

SOAP Shirts and P1 Drug Cards: Order Deadline Today! 

The Student Oncological Advocates in Pharmacy (SOAP) is selling their popular t-shirts, so don't miss out! This year, t-shirts will not be shipped; however, they can be picked up at the Athens campus or any of the PharmD extended campuses. If you are unable to pick up your shirt, please contact Kristina Caldwell or Brianna Beldon for an alternate plan. You can place your order here by today, August 7th. If you would like to order multiple shirts, please fill out a separate order form for each shirt. 
APhA-ASP is selling Drug Cards to ensure you will be prepared for your Drug Card Exams this fall. These cards contain the top 300 drugs which will be covered on multiple exams over the year, in addition to other cards sets such as OTC meds (which will be covered during the P1 spring semester), injectable (tested during P2 year), and the dietary drugs cards. It is strongly encouraged that you purchase these cards, as they will be your primary form of studying for these exams. Due to the current circumstances, we are primarily taking PayPal but if this does not work out for you please email Emmanuel Andrade. Order here, and please reference this document showing how to pay through PayPal. The form will close for P1s today, August 7th.

Your Opinion Matters: Strategic Planning 2025

We need your feedback on our recent Strategic Plan!  Under the direction of Dr. Michael Bartlett, Associate Dean for Science Education, Research and Technology, a draft of the plan was recently completed, and we need your input on our progress.  The COP Strategic Plan 2025 survey is designed to obtain valuable feedback from faculty and staff concerning the tactics and action items of this critical document.  A summary of the results of this survey, along with any feedback we may receive from the Provost’s Office, will be shared at the August 14 faculty meeting (with staff invited to the first portion), along with a timeline for how we will finalize the COP Strategic Plan.  Please complete this survey TODAY!
