Leadership Team Memo

October 6, 2019

Hello Von Community (Español)!

We are half way through first quarter!  Progress reports have been printed! PAWS Tutoring after school has started!  And we hope that everyone has started to develop good habits and routines as a foundation to be more confident as a learner. And if you are struggling, it is important that you ask for help.  Students and parents make sure you are checking your grades and attendance on the portal often so that you can advocate for yourself, as well as make sure you are reaching your fullest potential. Our PRIDE focus this week is EFFORT--now is the time to put your effort into reflecting on your performance and being the best version of yourself!

Important dates coming up:

  • Monday, October 14th: No School--Indigenous Peoples Day
  • Wednesday, October 16th: PSAT Testing (for 9th, 10th, and 11th grades), Senior FAFSA Workshops
  • Thursday, October 17th: College Fair (11th & 12th grades) from 11am - 1pm, Homecoming Pep Rally (8th period) & Homecoming Football Game at 3:30pm
  • Friday, October 18th: Homecoming Dance from 7 - 10 pm
  • *******Please be advised that if there is a union strike, we will communicate adjustments to the schedule as soon as possible.******

Please remember being a student is your first responsibility at Von Steuben! Make sure your grades are on track and, as always,  you put forth your best effort! Next week, we will have an amazing spirit week to celebrate each of you making strides towards your future. Homecoming Dance ticket sales started last week. Please make sure you are doing your best to meet requirements: be in medical compliance, passing all of your classes, and have a 90% attendance rate. Know your data and buy your tickets early this year!

Parents, please make sure you have turned in your family income forms. The due date WAS Monday, September 30th. We are following up with families who did not turn in these important forms. They determine our funding and resources as a school and qualify students based on income status. Thank you for turning these in as soon as possible! Time is running out.

Please reach out to anyone on the leadership team if you have any questions or concerns!

Together, we are Von strong!

For 20 years, the Chicago affiliate of the national ACE Mentor Program has introduced thousands of students citywide to careers in architecture, engineering and construction management. During our free, after school program, high school participants gather at professional firms’ downtown offices where our volunteer architects, engineers and construction managers lead an exploration of careers in the design and construction industry through hands-on activities, field trips, and creating a team design project.

Students who successfully participate in ACE Chicago have an opportunity to apply for a college scholarship or summer experiences.  Since our inception, the Chicago ACE Mentor Program has awarded more than $1.5 million in college scholarships, 245 paid summer internships, and positions in summer architecture camps and our ACE Design-Build Workshop!

The deadline to apply is Friday, October 11, 2019  at  http://acementorchicago.org/enroll/. Late registrations will not be accepted. Interested students should apply early to ensure that their applications are considered. Students will be notified by e-mail by the week of October 21st if they have been accepted, so they should supply a valid e-mail address that they frequently check. For information about the ACE Mentor Program and to view videos of ACE in Action, visit us at www.acementorchicago.org.

~ WARNING ~

As we told you at Curriculum Night, students are not allowed to have nor use e-cigarettes or vapes (both nicotine and Marijuana) or have any paraphernalia associated with the use of these products. Not only because they are illegal for people under the age of 21 but because they have serious health risks. It is important that we create a safe learning environment for our students.  We want students and parents to be informed in the choices that they make.  Please click HERE for more information about the growing public health concerns around the use of these products and why we are taking it so seriously if they are brought into the building.

ADVERTENCIA
