RENEGADES: BRUCE GOFF AND THE AMERICAN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

FRED JONES JR. MUSEUM OF ART
FRED JONES JR. MUSEUM OF ART
Opening Reception:
Thursday, Jan. 23
Panel Discussion: 7 PM
Exhibition Open to the Public: 8:00 PM

Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture, a joint exhibition between the University of Oklahoma’s Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the Christopher C. Gibbs School of Architecture, opens to the public on January 23 and will be on view through April 5.

The opening night will consist of a panel discussion at 7:00 PM with exhibition curator Luca Guido, lead designer Michael Hoffner, and the College of Architecture’s Director of Research Initiatives and Strategic Planning Angela Person. Following the panel, the exhibition will officially open to the public at 8:00 PM in the Nancy Johnston Records Gallery.

The American School refers to the school of design and practice that developed under the guidance of Bruce Goff, Herb Greene and others at the University of Oklahoma in the 1950s and ‘60s. Exhibition curator Luca Guido says the installation will focus on two important aspects of architectural education in the U.S. of the last century. “On one hand, it briefly introduces the turning point between the Beaux-Arts approach and the Bauhaus model, that represents the common path of all-American schools of architecture. On the other hand, it presents the pedagogical experiment promoted by Bruce Goff at the University of Oklahoma, that was a unique experience and little-known page of history of contemporary architecture.”

Renegades will remain on display through April 5 with a symposium, Schools of Thought: Rethinking Architectural Pedagogy, hosted by the College of Architecture scheduled for March 5 through 7 at the museum.

BRUCE GOFF & HERB GREENE: PAINTING THE CONTINUOUS PRESENT

PRICE TOWER ARTS CENTER
PRICE TOWER ARTS CENTER
Opening Reception:
Friday, January 24, 5:30 -7:00 PM

Exhibition on View:
January 24 - March 22, 2020

“There is no beginning and no ending. There is always a constant flow, the ‘continuous present’ as Gertrude Stein calls it… What has been done is ever changing, through time, because of our attitude toward it. We are recreating the past in the light of the present, always.” - Bruce Goff

Goff and Greene’s respective trajectories as artists and architects, are rooted in synergistic theories, derived from inspiration found in the arts, classical music, literature and philosophy.  Harmony is of foremost importance in their work; a common denominator that they believe unites all the various elements of a fully realized endeavor, whether it be a painting or a design for architecture.

The range of artworks on view in Bruce Goff & Herb Greene: Painting the Continuous Present, bring notions of a perpetual composition into conversation. Fluid movement and rhythmic variation is a defining characteristic in each of the works, encouraging us to embrace memory and perception as a constantly evolving generative force.

HERB GREENE: EXISTENTIAL GENERATION

MAINSITE CONTEMPORARY ART
MAINSITE CONTEMPORARY ART
Opening Reception

May 8, 2020
7:00-10:00 PM

The collection of collage paintings that will be on view in the solo exhibition, Herb Greene: Existential Generation, transform images from popular culture into compositions that reveal existential underpinnings and personal interpretations of historical events, places, people and objects.  Visual narratives weave throughout the eleven paintings, deconstructing the human condition by extracting fragments from different points in time. The layered compositions create a framework for the viewer to reflect on tensions between finite definitions of reality and the boundless realm of collective consciousness.

The artworks highlight a timeline that surveys paintings from 1964-1984, with content that spans pivotal moments in American history, including three different wars, The Great Depression era and social justice movements. The painted imagery merges with photographic collage, generating a cognitive process that ignites the viewers memory and prompts a fluid perceptual experience of the space-time continuum.
