"A Home-Bound Launch"

Dear friends and family,

As we mentioned in our update last month, changes in our Wycliffe ministry are coming soon!

It's amazing it's been over nine years since we first landed in this beautiful Land of the Unexpected. We fell in love with this country and its beautiful people and are extremely grateful for having had the opportunity to live, serve, worship, work, serve, love and serve our Great and Mighty and Wonderful Counselor in such a land for such a time. In many ways, of course, it has become "home".

To that end, though, our 'passport country' (the United States of America) was our first home and sending base--as you well know! Thank you for your participation in that!

[above, header picture: taken from the same rose bush & stem in our front yard last week; to me it represents "out with the old and in with the new"...much like we feel in this coming season of our lives and Wycliffe ministry ...in this context such an idiom might imply the 'old' is 'bad' or worthy to be 'discarded', but that's not the case; the case here is simply that God is doing something different and magnificent and we want to continue to be 'on about' spreading the Gospel no matter where "home" might be]

Video recap of the New Testament Bible dedication that Alyssa attended with her close friend, Jessica, & her family (who were the lead translators/consultants) back in December. Rejoice with us that the Gizrra now have the Bible in their first tongue! (:
LAUNCH EXPENSE ACCOUNT

As we seek to re-enter the American culture, not only will prayer and regular financial partnership continue to be needed, so, too, will some one-time expenses/needs (e.g. housing, transportation, etc.)

Wycliffe has established a separate account for us—and you—to be able to allocate resources for these goals. This account will remain open only through June 30, 2021 (this account is necessary based on IRS rules and regulations).

To give ONLINE:

(*if you would like to give a one-time gift toward our initial moving expenses, make sure to choose “Launch Expense Account” from the drop-down menu - see image example below)

A beautiful rainbow recently appeared &
reminded us of God's faithfulness (i.e. promises).
So what’s next?
  • Alyssa will be graduating on June 4th
  • We currently have plans to begin the process of beginning travel on June 8th (this is a big prayer point – being able to successfully travel internationally right now as, at present, TWO negative covid tests per person within 72 hours of initiating international travel are required before we can 'get on the plane').
  • If all goes as hoped and planned, we should arrive back in Oregon (PDX) the late afternoon of June 11th.
  • We will be talking online with someone from Wycliffe USA in the next week or two about a new opportunity (role/job/work)!

Wait...so why are you leaving PNG?

Many of you may remember a previous newsletter where we shared our hopes of taking a study leave after Alyssa graduated. At that time, the school here in Ukarumpa was interested in Cathy taking a study leave to become a fully qualified Educational Psychologist.

In the time following that newsletter, Todd began feeling that God was directing us back to Oregon, so we both began praying for more insight. When we returned to PNG in January of 2020, we found that many aspects of the school here had changed and the need for learning assistance had also shifted. As we saw these doors beginning to close, we were at first discouraged, but, recalling that we were actively seeking God's direction, we started to realize that he was the one closing the doors.

Leaving is not an easy decision, but we feel very much at peace that this is God's direction for our family and both of us have a desire to return to Oregon and invest in ministry there. We are sad to say good-byes but we are also excited to see what God has in store back in Oregon (still with Wycliffe!). Thank you for walking this journey with us!

Alyssa performing during the recent High School play "Life - the Great Adventure" (written by Cathy!). Lyss did awesome (I'm biased, but...she did!) (o;
And big 'props' (no pun intended but feel free, too! haha) to Cath as she created a socially-distanced set, scenes, cast, etc. Perhaps a new 'style' of Theater Arts? Hmm...
We would love for you to pray for us, that through all of our upcoming transition (that will no doubt be filled with many ups and downs and with its fair share of clarity, confusion and even a smidgen of chaos tossed in) that we:

may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding…”
see Colossians 1:9-12
PRAYER & PRAISE Points:
  • PRAISE again that God has given us direction to return to Oregon and pursue a stateside role with Wycliffe.
  • PRAISE that we have flights scheduled and that we were able to pay for them in full up front!
  • PRAYER: for our meeting and conversation in the next week or two with Wycliffe USA about a job / role placement.
  • PRAYER: that no matter the remote-from-Oregon role, God would continue to lead the way and provide as He always has (we'll need to first be at 100% of an increased monthly support amount before beginning the new role...and as you might already firmly know and guess, living in the states requires more monthly expense than it does to live in PNG!)
  • PRAYER: that Alyssa would wrap up her time well here and that all of us would be able to 'finish well'; this includes prayer for Andrew in Eugene, Oregon at Bushnell University as we had hoped and planned two years ago that when he graduated grade 12 under the very then-recent chaotic cloud of grief (tOdd losing his mom/the kids losing their Grandma unexpectedly) that he'd be able to 'come back' to Ukarumpa one last time to say 'bye' and see his sister graduate, etc. This obviously is unable to happen due to current restrictions.
