Parra Chatta

Volume 13, No. 9, November 2019

President's message

About 25 members attended our Future Directions workshop last Saturday, 9th November.  We discussed the issues that face us in continuing to provide a service to members, and how we might change the way we do things.  Deb Neyle is collating the results of our discussions into a report which will go to the Management Committee for consideration and action, and to all members for your information.

Margaret Tucker Moxon has produced our ParraChatta newsletter nearly every month since the Club started  -  that's about 150 editions!  We are immensely grateful to Margaret, who has decided to step down as Editor.  I will take over in the interim, until the Committee can appoint someone else.  If you would like to take on this important role, please let me know.  You don't need to be a Committee member or a trainer, just good with words!

Your ParraChatta newsletter looks different this month because it is being designed and distributed via MailChimp (the same platform George uses for the Weekly Update).  It will take me a little while to work out how to do this as well as George does, so please bear with me.

And keep learning (as I am!)

November Member Meeting

Our November meeting is at the UNE Lecture Theatre, Level 1, 232 Church Street, Parramatta on Thursday, 21st November from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.

Our guest speaker for this meeting is Zachary Brett, who will be demonstrating Virtual Reality experiences.  Zachary has started his own IT business, Experience IT, in North Parramatta, and offered to be a volunteer tutor for us, but as he is only 23 years old we invited him to be a guest speaker instead.

Zachary has been working with computers since he was 2 years old, his first computer was a custom built computer that he designed himself when he was 16 years of age. Zachary studied at the Academy of Information Technology or (AIT) to earn his Bachelor of Interactive Media (Specialising in Game Design) and after this took on the IT support role. His first job was at Cochlear in Macquarie Park then moving to Fujitsu in Auburn. Zachary is well versed in many technologies, while studying at university Zachary was able to use Virtual Reality technology to aid him in completing his course by creating his final game with Virtual Reality. Zachary has been working in and around technology for many years, if there is anything that he does not know he will spend every spare moment trying to find out more about it.

Suggestion Box

These are the suggestions we've received in August, September, and October, and the Committee's responses:

Suggestion 1. Provide a headset for Office Assistants so they can type while talking on the phone.
Committee response: Approved. Getting a bluetooch headset would require purchasing a new phone, so we will get a wired headset that plugs into the phone.  We've asked Verna to investigate and report back to the Committee.

Suggestion 2. Run training on how to download movies from the internet to your PC laptop and movies from camera/phone.
Committee response: Downloading movies you have taken with your phone is the same process as downloading photos, and we already run a course on this.  Downloading movies from websites such as YouTube may breach copyright, which is illegal, so you need to purchase a legal copy that you can then download, or subscribe to a website that allows you to rent movies.  Note that City of Parramatta Library also offers free movies you can borrow and download.

Suggestion 3. Suggest when speaking on the phone that volunteers do not call people ‘love’.
Committee response: We acknowledge some people don’t like it; let the person speaking to you know if you feel uncomfortable being called 'love'.  We are grateful to all our volunteers for the service they provide.

Suggestion 4. Could we have ‘app of the month’ at meeting and in newsletter?
Committee response: Yes, but need a volunteer to take responsibility for doing this - any offers?

Suggestion 5. The Android class think an overnight trip to Camberra would be fun - we could catch the train or a Murrays coach - there is lots to see and do - Parliament House tour with Julie Owen?
Committee response: We will look into it (John Hain to follow up)

Celebrating achievements

Congratulations to our Treasurer, Colleen Burns, who was nominated for the Commonwealth Bank Not-for-Profit Treasurers' Awards 2019 and received a certificate from them.  Colleen does a great job keeping our Club finances in order.

Verna Saunders, who is a member of the Creative Writing Special Interest Group, entered a short story in the Mudgee Valley Writers FAW 'More than Words' literary competition this year and her entry and accompanying photo was included in the book of winning entries they published - Verna is now a published author!
